How to Port a US Telephone Number to Your Account

Overview

Porting your existing telephone number into PXME ensures seamless communication continuity without changing the number your patients already recognize. This process requires preparing authorization documents, submitting recent billing information, and working with PXME Support to transfer the number from your current provider.

Step 1: Prepare Required Information

Before starting, gather the following:

  • Location ID – Found in Settings > Business Profile.

  • Customer Name – Must match exactly what appears on your current telephone bill.

  • First & Last Name.

  • Business Name (if applicable).

  • Service Address – Must be a physical location (no PO Boxes).

  • Telephone Numbers to Port – List all numbers you want to transfer.

  • Number Type – Wireless, Landline, or Toll-Free.

  • Phone Number(s) – Must be in E.164 format (example: +1XXXYYYZZZZ).

  • Wireless Account Number (if applicable).

  • PIN / Last 4 of SSN (for wireless numbers).

  • Current Service Provider.

Step 2: Prepare a Letter of Authorization (LOA)

  • Must be in PDF format, under 4 MB.

  • Complete the porting form with all required details.

  • Ensure the LOA is dated within the last 15 days.

Step 3: Include a Recent Phone Bill

  • Submit a scanned or electronic copy of your most recent phone bill.

  • Must be in PDF format, under 4 MB.

Step 4: Submit the Documents

  • Send the Letter of Authorization and billing statement to PXME Support.

  • PXME will file the transfer request directly with the carrier.

Important Notes

  • Cell Numbers – If you port your personal cell number, the change cannot be undone. Only port business or VoIP lines when possible.

  • Porting Fees – A one-time fee is charged per number.

  • Timeframe:

    • US Numbers – A few days to 2 weeks.

    • Canadian Numbers – 4–6 weeks depending on the losing carrier.

  • Internal Transfers – If the number already exists with the same carrier (under another PXME project), it may be transferred internally. Provide the losing account identifier.

Canadian Number Porting (Special Notes)

  • Follows the same process as US porting.

  • Requires the customer account number as recorded with your provider.

  • After porting, confirm the number’s features (voice, SMS, fax) to ensure full functionality.

FAQs – Number Porting

Q2: Can I use a P.O. Box as my service address?
A: No. Only physical addresses are accepted.

A: Customer details, list of numbers, and info matching your bill. Must be a recent PDF (within 15 days).

Q4: Can I port my personal cell phone number?

✅ Key Takeaways

  • Porting ensures you keep your current number while moving it into PXME.

  • Requires a Letter of Authorization and a recent phone bill.

  • Processing time varies from a few days (US) to several weeks (Canada).

  • Best practice: port business lines, not personal cell numbers.
