Overview
Unsubscribe links are a mandatory requirement in all marketing emails to ensure compliance with global laws like CAN-SPAM (U.S.) and GDPR (EU). PXME automatically provides a default unsubscribe option, but you can also choose to manually insert one using a special tag. This article explains how unsubscribe links work in PXME, the difference between default and manual placement, and best practices for compliance and design.
What is an Unsubscribe Link?
An unsubscribe link allows recipients to opt out of future marketing emails. Compliance laws require it:
CAN-SPAM Act (U.S.) – Every commercial email must have a clear opt-out method.
GDPR (EU) – Gives subscribers the right to stop communications and have their data removed.
⚠️ Non-compliance penalties can be severe (e.g., up to €20M or 4% of global annual turnover under GDPR).
Default Unsubscribe Link
By default, PXME automatically places this link at the bottom of bulk/marketing emails:
“If you no longer wish to receive these emails, you may click here to unsubscribe.”
How to Manage the Default Link:
Go to Settings > Business Profile > General.
Toggle the unsubscribe option ON/OFF.
Customize the unsubscribe text if needed.
Manual Unsubscribe Link (Custom Placement)
For full design control, you can manually add the unsubscribe link:
Turn OFF the default footer unsubscribe option.
Insert the tag
{{unsubscribe}}anywhere in your email template.Example placements: at the top of the email, in the footer signature, or styled into a button.
⚠️ If you disable the default footer but forget to add {{unsubscribe}}, your emails will be non-compliant.
Using Both Default + Manual Links
If you include both:
PXME will insert two unsubscribe links (one in the footer + your custom placement).
This may clutter your design and confuse recipients.
Best Practice: Use only one method.
Default link → If footer placement works for you.
Manual tag → If you want custom design or placement.
Resubscribe Option
When a contact unsubscribes, PXME shows a success message with a resubscribe link. If clicked, the contact is immediately removed from the do-not-disturb list and restored as a subscriber.
Enforcement Rules
Unsubscribe links are mandatory for:
Bulk emails
Workflow emails
Emails sent via the Email Builder
Exception: 1:1 direct conversations do not require unsubscribe links.
Pro Tips
Stay compliant: Regularly check that unsubscribe links are included in new templates.
Test before sending: Send yourself a preview to ensure links display and work correctly.
Track unsubscribes: Use reporting to monitor opt-outs and adjust your content strategy.
