Email Attachment Size Limits

Overview

PXME enforces file size limits for email attachments to ensure reliable delivery and protect sender reputation. This article explains the maximum file size allowed, why limits exist, and the best alternatives for sharing larger files with your patients or leads.

Understanding Email Attachment Limits

All email providers set limits on how large an attachment can be. If an email exceeds this limit, it will bounce back and show an error inside your PXME Conversations tab.

Common error messages include:

  • “Attachment size exceeds the allowable limit”

  • “552: Message size exceeds maximum permitted”

  • “System Undeliverable, message size exceeds outgoing message size limit”

  • “The size of the message you are trying to send exceeds the global size limit of the server. The message was not sent; reduce the message size and try again.”

Why Limits Exist

  • Provider restrictions – Free email accounts typically allow smaller attachments; business/professional accounts often allow larger.

  • Security – Large attachments can overload mail servers or be used maliciously.

  • Consistency – Limits ensure smooth, consistent email delivery across different providers.

PXME (via Mailgun) Limit

  • Maximum size per email (including attachments): 25MB

⚠️ If your file(s) push the email size beyond this limit, the message will bounce.

What To Do If Files Are Too Large

If attachments exceed the size limit:

  1. Upload them to a cloud storage provider like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.

  2. Insert the shareable link into your email instead of attaching the file.

This ensures reliable delivery and avoids bounce errors.
